I serve on the board of a Seattle Works, a non-profit who works to engage, inspire, and connect people in their 20's and 30's to take action.

This year local radio station KEXP is featuring a non-profit each month and hosting a benefit show for them. And the first organization of the year is Seattle Works.

So Saturday is the benefit show. In all honestly, I dont' know whose playing, but you can rock out for a good cause.

On Tuesday my hairdresser, Sara, wanted to know what I do with my new and improved unemployed life. (Or free time as she put it.) This question has become awkward and irritating, as I never have a lot to report.

Me to an employed person:

“Hey, how was your day?”

Employed person:

“Really busy. Put out two press releases. Had three meeting with partner organizers. Went to the gym. Worked on my taxes. You?”

Me:

“Oh, you know, I had a meeting. Big Day” Then in a more muffled toned. “Well, a meeting with my doctor…about my sinuses.”

So I’ve started to construct days that seem more important than they actually are. Now taking out the garbage is viewed as “office cleaning.” Watching the Today Show is referred to as “keeping up on trends and current events.”

I don’t know if I’ll get over the stigma of not working, and on top of it all not working by choice. Before January I certainly didn’t know what people did with their free time if they weren’t at work. Like how could my grandma possibly feel busy if her day involved going to three different grocery stores is search of coupon clippers or gambling at the Muckleshoot Casino? And can’t you take care of cutting your nails after work. Does that really involve an hour-long process? (And yes, yes it does….)

But now I’m one of them. America’s unemployed.

So I was explaining to Sara that I keep busy working out, working a little from home, reading everything I always said I would, and watching daytime television. Not a lot of day-time television, but enough that when she asked me if I watched the Ellen Show I had to not only say yes, but yes to the last week of the show.

We laughed about how ridiculous day-time TV…and how I discovered it only involves four themes for commercials:

Weight Loss
No Credit, Bad Credit, No Problem! (and) Debt-Relief
Get an Education-TODAY!
Kill those germs!

But then realized that it wasn’t just other people watching those commercials, I’m watching it as well. Those are my people. When I was in school my people where other students. And when I worked they were my co-workers and peers. And my old boss Marga’s people where “peeps in all purple.” But now I have no affiliations. I belong to the land of the constant search of a better affiliation; one that is skinny, with no debt, has lots of money, and never is dirty. Those are my people. Does this mean I need to get a job?

Scrappy: I was just going to hop in the shower, it's nothin'.

Moderator:.Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself and your style?

Scrappy: My style is basically real crunk. At first when we came out with crunk, people thought it was all jumping and screaming, but my s*** is real. It's 3D. I got to put out my experiences. I'm the youngest CEO in Atlanta. I got my own label, G's Up. I got Crunk Incorporated. You know I'm trying to do a lot of other deals and get myself out a little more. My new album, "Bred to Die Born to Live" is out in October.Jason, Florida: Are you with G-Unit (http://www.g-unitsoldier.com/) or BME (http://www.bmerecordings.com)?

Scrappy: I'm with BME but G-Unit is my people, and something might happen with that to go further.

Moderator: How'd you hook on with the Anger Management tour?

Scrappy: Me and 50 Cent had the same management, Violator, and then they wanted Lil Jon on the tour, so it was like I was on regardless, you know.Perdana, Los Angeles: What can we expect from your new album as far as guests and production go?

Scrappy: Of course 50 Cent, the whole G-Unit, Lil John, lots of others. I've got a lot of people, Scott Storch, David Banner.Moderator: You've got a spot on the Young Jeezy LP dropping later this month -- what can you tell us about it? Scrappy: It's an Atlanta thing, Jeezy, me and T.I. We're the known hit, as for how the young n***** go. G's are from different zones -- Jeezy is from Zone 4, T.I. from Zone 1 and I'm from Zone 3 -- so we're right there and got together, put it down real nice like.

Moderator: The zones are police designations, right? Scrappy: Yeah, and that's how you grouped when you in prison.

Peter, Olympia: What's it like working with Lil Jon? Is he really like the Chappelle stereotype of saying mainly "wwwwhat?" "eeee-YEAH" and "hokay!"? Also I gotta say that "Head Bussa" is one of the best songs I have heard out of the South, thanks for makin' that one.

Scrappy: Sometimes it's not even a "what" or a "yeah," it's crazy s***. He might be like, it's all good b****, I like it. It's some crazy s***. But other times he's quiet like real life. Sho, it's real s***.

Moderator: The early days of hip-hop were all about New York, and then the West Coast came about 20 years ago. Why did it take until the mid-90's for the Deep South, which has the highest concentration of black people in the country, to really blow up in the mainstream?

Scrappy: Because we are wild, you know? So we put style with wild and it's hard for you to understand why we're doing that. Then again, there's a lot of wild New Yorkers. That's why they still underground. There's a lot of people that don't like Southern people, because we say what we want. Going commercial is the extreme, you feel me? You don't want to go too pop. It's underground, and it stayed that way. Some break out, and there will be more to break out, but it's a time thing.

Kevin, Lacey: How can you justify calling yourself a legitimate artist when your "songs" have names like "What the F---"? Any teenager can write lyrics full of foul language and obscenities. Just describing conditions you may have grown up in is not a good reason. Focus should be on uplifting people in bad circumstances, not reminding them of the trash that's around them everyday. Please grow up and stop selling this trash to our kids.

Moderator: Any response?Scrappy: Yeah, I got a response. Tell him I said thank you for even listening to my record, without him listening, the kids wouldn't even know about it. All I'm asking is "what the f*** is going on?"" He needs to look around and ask the same thing.
Tyler, Olympia: What do you think is the biggest problem with the music industry?
Scrappy: TV, really. TV and the fame of it, the fame of it tears the whole s*** up. Anything with fame. It exposes itself, you know. Have you ever noticed us as rappers? We blow up, but then at the end they hate us for some reason. It's like you explode yourself and only a few can hang in there, like the Jay-Zs and Biggies. You're not always going to have a Tupac to say f*** that and stay right here.

Anonymous: Why don't you like Don-P?

Moderator: Some background: Don-P is in Trillville, which split its first LP with Lil Scrappy. Lil Scrappy's "Full Metal Jacket" mixtape took a few shots at Don-P, who recently responded with the beef-focused "Target Practice" mixtape featuring a shot-up picture of Lil Scrappy on the cover. Scrappy: Really the Don-P thing was like, I'm a real dude and I do my own thing and don't f*** with anyone, but he felt for some reason, he wanted to start something. He wanted to talk s***, but don't want to finish it, don't want to fight. The dude is gay. Only a man would try to mess with another man.Moderator: He's said a lot of bad things about you on his mixtape.

Scrappy: I don't want to go back at him because I said if he put it out, I wouldn't put any out. He's not serious, just playing. Don-P has a cartoon gun on his album cover, I got a real gun, an AK-47. His album is coming in September, mine in October. The whole beef s*** is over, I just wanted to f*** with him a bit. Anything else that happens, you'll probably hear I knocked his a** out when we got into it and s***.

Moderator: My colleague was wondering if the beefs are real or promotional gimmicks.

Scrappy: Any time you give rappers too much character, like when they aren't hard but TV makes them think they are -- have you ever seen in a real fight where people keep talking and don't fight? That's not real life. In a real fight, they just fight. Like that Tupac and Biggie s***, like Flip and T.I. Something happened that was real, not just talking.

Moderator: For those of us unfamiliar with the scene, what exactly are mixtapes and where can people get copies of them?

Scrappy: Mixed tapes are just in the middle of you working on your album, since we can't get the money off of our albums, we want to hold the streets down and get the money off our music, so it's damn near bootlegging ourselves. And it's good to get yourself out there on the street when people are trying to hide you.

Moderator: You got that song on your album about bootlegging. Is that a big problem for artists down there?Scrappy: For real. They bootleg the hell out of m***********. It's the engineers. Everyone knows that's the ones who give it out. So you have to have a good engineer who won't f*** you. First they charge you and then they sell your s*** out from under you.

Moderator: Where can you get mixtapes?Scrappy: You can get mixed tapes at mom and pop stores. (mod: Maybe near the artist's hometown -- if you want a mixtape from another part of the country -- like, say, Atlanta -- several Web sites sell them.)

Anton, Maryland: How did you get signed? I mean, I been writin' for a minute, so I decided to record and let everyone listen. They told me I was plain genius, so I'm tryin' to get noticed. How did you get noticed? Good luck with your career, man.

Scrappy: Actually it started from writing poems and s***. I was a good poem writer in school and literature was the only class I got an A in -- everything else was an F. I just got the heart for it. I went to a place one day where they said my stuff sounded like s***, but I sold it on the street and in mom and pop stores and talent shows and rocked the same club every weekend until someone just looked.

Moderator: How did Lil John catch on to you?

Scrappy: They were signing Trillville and they were at my show and so everyone heard my headbussa song, and when I came on, it was a straight bar fight -- going crazy, people getting arrested, a full brawl in the club -- and one of the BME people was there in a suit and had to take off his jacket and tie and said it was amazing, nothing but a college crowd going crazy like some s*** on TV.

Terrell, Southwest Atlanta: If Lil Jon had asked you to walk 15 miles for cheesecake like Diddy did, would you have done it for a deal? Would you do it now even though you have a deal? After all, Jon still writes the checks, right?
Scrappy: No, cause I have to be a man, because I be a rapper. I have too much dignity and pride to walk for another n***** if he ain't going to walk with me. But that's a true story. It was on MTV's "Made" and Diddy made him walk all the way across the Brooklyn Bridge for some cheesecake.

Anonymous: Does your label G's Up have a deal yet? Also, are you looking for talent?

Scrappy: Yeah, we have a deal coming out next summer with Warner Brothers. They can send tapes to GsUpRecords.com.

Moderator: Is this your first national tour?

Scrappy: Yes, I already saw the country, but it's amazing the more people you see -- it's not just the black crowd anymore. It's whites, everybody and their momma, and their grandma for chrissake. Eighty-year-olds and old people recognize me.

Moderator: If you could collaborate with anyone, who would you want to work with?

Scrappy: If it could be anybody, it would be JayZ or somebody like 50 Cent.

Moderator: Want to add anything?

Scrappy: Nah.

My car was recovered from 1191 31st Ave (?) with the engine still running last night.

Today I went to go claim my car at the tow yard.

After Mapquest led me and my rental car aptly named the Golden Booger (by potentially one of the most clever women in King County, Jill Wasberg) on and off the freeway three times (off one exit, on the next, off another and so on), I arrived at the ABC Tow Yard. What I expected to be a large lot filled with piles of cars a mile high was in fact a small shack disguised as a reputable place a business. Inside was a very small waiting area which at the present time was consumed by the coughs of a very angry and disheveled man who was there to pick up his car. With cash. Hundreds of it. He was quite angry, and I decided this was my call to go wait outside for the arrival of my insurance agent.

Small nervous insurance agent named Dave from Bellevue arrived in his large perky American car, armed with commando laptop. Or as Panasonic named it, "The Toughguy."
We hashed details back and forth as we waited for the slow receptionist (the tired, messy and somewhat belligerent breed) to lead us back to witness the fate of my small little car.
Hiding behind rows of car wrecks, burglaries, and other such nonsense lay my car. It was hiding behind other beat up cars of its like, embarrassed for the world to see it in such a state. As I approached by car, I was surprised to see its exterior in the only half beaten up shape in which I had last left it. It wasn't until I looked inside did the horror unveil itself in full form.

Clothes, shoes, empty pop bottles, and papers were thrown everywhere. And for once, they weren't mine!

It wasn't until I opened up the car that I became witness to the havoc that had ensued during my car's four day absence.

To sum up shortly:

AND one book on insects of the Western Coast

Oddly, the only thing missing from my car was the WCV vinyl banner. However, the presence of pee made me relinquish many of my now tainted personal items.

And of course there was the usual damage. My favorite was the burn mark on my dashboard, which my nervous little insurance agent accredited to "crack-cocaine." This made him especially excited.

So, my car is off to be sanitized, and I can continue pursuing my life-long dream to be a bike commuter. For now.

Forget you "Art" or What really burns me today (Part II)

1. That I just spent an hour writing the second edition of “What really burns me” and my computer deleted it.

2. Yesterday I got to work early. But not early as in I meant to “meant to get to work early.” No, I just had no fucking idea what time it was I should have been tipped of when on my drive to work I thought “Gee, they extended Morning Edition so we no longer have to listen to that chump Ross Reynolds at 9.” I also should have been tipped off when the normally packed parking garage was empty. I also should have noticed when I got to work and no one was there. But no, first I had to assume a catastrophe and run about the back cubicles like a freak shouting my co-workers names. Until I ran past a clock that read 7:45.

So when I get home last night I see that my alarm clock read “12:30,” but it’s really 11:30. And I swear to god I’m not making this up. And as the lazy person that I am I set the alarm clock for “8” the next morning, because it will really be “7” after all. So when I roll out of bed at “8:40” I head to the couch to drink coffee and watch a little bit of the Today show. (We will never again speak of my reference to my small fetish for Katie Couric.) And the clock on the television screen reads 8:50. And I run over to my computer: it reads 8:50. One last check on my kitchen clock. Fuck.

3. Today I went to Costco with my co-workers. For work. Well at least one of us, not me, was there for work. I was more tagging along for the lunchtime samples. Which were unpleasantly extremely disappointing. Upon spotting some tasty looking pita chips and spinach dip and ran up to the man slowly dishing them out samples for those of us to cheap to buy the $1.50 pizza slices for lunch. And the sample man sees me, looks up and does nothing. Then a cart with small boys pulls up and he happily gives them two over flowing cups of pita chips. And I’m still there. Standing. Waiting. And he very slowly uses a spoon to dish out ONE pita chip in a cup for me.

When we do make it to the check out line it becomes a long, unruly process. Three of us make the cashier ring up five different bills. But we were really nice about it. And although he looks mad, he promises me he used the coupon for the Armor All I’m buying. But he’s a liar. And it’s a $3.50 coupon. I bet he thinks I won’t come back in and do anything about it. Or that I wont’ even noticed. Nope, I go back in and make Peter wait a half hour for my $3.50.

4. And this is this is what really burns me today. So after Costco Peter takes Jill and me to the Art Wolfe Gallery to buy a 30th birthday present for his wife Emily. As I have an unnatural fear of photos with horses and wolves, not to mention general wildlife art, this visit is a first for me. (Not to mention an unnatural fear of Art Wolfe.) But Peter thinks its cool, I think Peter is cool, so I’m a great sport. And Peter is a great husband and customer and buys Emily a $65 dollar coffee table book and a framed print of monarch butterflies and is going to get Art to sign the book. But Art doesn’t like Peter’s inside to inscribe the book with “Peter and Emily, I hope to catch up with you on your travels.” This is unacceptable to Art. No, he writes “Happy 30th Birthday “Emily.”” With “Emily” in quotations. What an ass. Forget you “Art.”

1. The my aching heel is most likely "planter fasciitis." This would not be a big deal except everyone I tell believes it means foot fungus.
2. That everytime I go running in spandex I see someone I know. No one ever seems to see me on the that one day I run like a gazelle and look super hip (and in shape.)
3. That the boss on the "The Office," was mimicked after my own fearless leader at work.
4. That Sunday's Arrested Development may be its last show ever.
5. And last, the new Pope. I'm not Catholic, so I shouldn't really get so worked up about this. But still: Who is this guy? I think he appeared out of my Larium induced nightmares. On a typical Saturday evening, I was sitting in the back corner of the Canterbury with Jill and Aisling when none other than our old friend "Coffee Shop Guy" came in. This was slightly ironic as I was just regaling how I can no longer sleep with service employees in my neighborhood, as it limits my scope of business I can patron. (For those of you who don't remember this is that guy from the Victrola that made me 'meow' when we had sex.)

As we were sitting in the south back corner of the smoking section we could see directly down the hall as he was asked for his ID. I promptly pointed at his back and as we all turned and gawked. He, of course, caught us in the act and scurried away.

Then, not a half hour later he paced in front of the inside window in front of us three times and tried to acknowledge eye contact with me, but instead was met with the staring eyes of Jill and Aisling. This was too much. He then moved to the bar and proceed to make conversation with two ridiculous looking girls.

Obviously, he was not going to come talk to me but awkwardly avert his eyes everytime I went to the bathroom.

So upon leaving the bar I realized I would have to be the bigger person and put him to shame.

(He has his back to me and is engaged in conversation with two of the most ridiculous, pseudo-gothic, Tori Amos worshipping like girls.)

Me, tapping on his back.

"Hey there."
"Oh hey there."

I can see him squirming in his seat.

"How are you doing?"
"Great, you?"
"Oh, you know I just got off of work and thought I would stop by for a beer."
"That's great, I'm about to take off right now."
"Oh, you've been here for awhile?"

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? You only self-consciously paced by me four times !

"Where have you been sitting?"
"Right over there."
"Oh yeah."

Silence.

"Hey I see you walking on 15th all the time."
"Well, that's because I live here."
"Right. So, yeah. I met these people (awful pseudo Goth girls) tonight. They're pretty cool. We've been talking about music."
"Anything good?"
We've been discussing what "Bristol Music" is, or whatever that means. You know."
"No. Well I got to go."

That was totally gross. But even grosser when I got home and Googled what the Bristol Music scene is afterall. Where I thought I may have been out-cooled or out-snobbed, I in fact learned that Bristol Music is our friend trip-hop, with such bands as Massive Attack, Portishead, and Tricky. (See article above)

You have got to be kidding me.

Last Days, The Week in Review, by David Schmader (03/03/05): "THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24 Today brings what the ages will hail as the most mind-boggling Hot Tip in Last Days' history, courtesy of worship-worthy Hot Tipper Cilantro. The scene: The Starbucks Licensed Stores Awards ceremony, a celebratory/motivational leadership conference, held this evening in the fourth-floor ballroom of the Washington State Convention Center. 'Boring stuff, as usual corporate things go,' writes our man Cilantro. But things took a turn for the surreal when the emcee announced 'something special for you all--Jefferson Starbucks!' after which the hydraulic stage rotated to reveal a pretend band comprised of the upper-management folk the audience had heard speak earlier in the evening. 'They were standing in front of a huge American Bandstand-esque 45 single dangling in the air,' writes Cilantro. 'And they all had on rock 'n' roll Halloween costumes: pink glitter wigs, white fishnet shirts, fake leather pants, as well as big fake instruments--a huge, oversized pi�ata guitar and keyboards. It was like a living cake decoration.' From this most promising of plateaus, Jefferson Starbucks quickly ascended to the heavens, lip-synching their way through a company-specific rewrite of Jefferson Starship's 'We Built This City,' the 1985 anthem that made fresh headlines last year by topping an international critics' poll of the worst songs ever. But tonight, Starship's crap was Starbucks' gold, as 'We Built This City On Rock 'n' Roll' was reborn as 'We Built This Starbucks on Heart and Soul!' with lyrics rewritten to celebrate the Starbucks way:

The rewrite even replicated the weird helicopter news report that appears in the middle of the original: 'I'm looking out over hundreds of partners on another fantastic leadership conference and I'm seeing a bunch of everyday heroes!' 'I couldn't fucking believe it,' writes Cilantro. 'The rest of the crowd was stunned, too. Eventually, the emcee berated them--'Come on you guys! Dance! This is your band! This is for you!'--and the crowd half-heartedly got up and just stood there.' (A moment of silence for the million silent deaths experienced by the audience during the song's merciless four-minute-and-48-second running time.) Best of all, before his departure, Cilantro was given his very own copy of the inexhaustibly mind-blowing song, pressed onto souvenir CDs and distributed with pride by Starbucks stars. i have been sick for a solid week now. this is getting ridiculous.

i was sent home from work early because i looked so miserable. this was very exciting and i even stopped by walgreens (kiddy corner from the ross bus stop) to treat my self to 20 dollars worth of flu supplies.

upon leaving walgreen i saw the number 10 and ran after it, only to be followed by a crazy crack-lady cheering me on. (it's nice to know i have a cheerleader for every occassion.) after crazy crack lady got off two stops later i was so relaxed i actually enjoyed my bus ride home.

that was until i got off and realized i am so out of it that i left my bag of newly purchased drugstore items on the bus.
